Data Security

What can go wrong will.

With that in mind, our hosting service provides the ultimate in redundant systems engineering to ensure the communications pathways, and the server hardware your information resides on are available as close to 100% as is possible.  To learn about our data centers click here

Even though we have provided such a high reliability system, there are still a lot of things that can go wrong with your site.  Sometimes through software problems, sometimes human error, and sometimes by evil influences.

To protect your data (using the collective 'You'') we perform daily backups to a separate hard drive.  These backups are to ensure we can restore the complete server in the event of a failure, and not specifically to ensure your (using the individual 'you') data.

Your control panel contains a backup tool that will create a single file backup of all of your data.  You may manually create full and incremental backups, leave them on the server or send them anywhere you choose using this tool.

Since the operating system of your host server is Unix, the backup file is in a format known as .tar (tape archive) and compressed in the gzip format.

To extract gzip compressed files in Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP use PowerArchiver 6.1 (freeware) or 7-zip (freeware) or Winzip (commercial).

Since you can use Winzip to restore .tar files in Windows it is probably the best all around solution.  Other .tar applications for MS-DOS are listed here

Your control panel includes another utility in the Advanced Tools section named 'Cron Jobs' that allows you to schedule jobs.  At present we are working on developing a script that you will be able to use from this tool to automate the backup process so that you may easily implement standard incremental and full backup procedures.  In the mean time you can schedule a full backup
