Sub Domains & Parked Domains

An example of a sub-domain is the WWW found in most web page addresses.  This specifies the port 80 HTTP protocol as well as the physical location in your account that is considered to be the 'root' of your web site.  Keep in mind that your hosting account also has directories for your mail account(s) and FTP account(s).  Each of which have their own 'root' as well as the actual account structure and supporting files necessary to provide you with the service.

If you add a sub-domain say catalog.mydomain.com it is treated as a separate web site within your web site.  By combining sub-domains with DNS settings you can host catalog.mydomain.com anywhere on the internet or even on your local area network, and easily make it available to authorized users world wide.

Parked domains are typically TLD's (Top Level Domains) that you have purchased, perhaps to protect your trade name.  For example if you own mydomain.com you may want to protect mydomain.net, mydomain.org, and mydomain.us to name a few. When you PARK these domains, you are automatically setting up DNS entries for each to send visitors to those domains to your primary domain.  In other words if you parked the .net, .org, and .us TLD's for mydomain onto mydomain.com a visitor to mydomain.net would be redirected to mydomain.com automatically.
